Excerpt from "Life after the great credit crunch", by Jacquie McNish:
The busiest deal paramedics are Mr. Halperin and his partner and workout pugilist Jim Riley. The duo and a dozen other Goodmans' lawyers were hired in early September to advise a high-profile team of major domestic and foreign investors and banks seeking to unlock more than $30-billion of asset-backed commercial paper (ABCP) paralyzed by investor fears about the notes' underlying assets.
Although the stakes are high, Mr. Halperin says the tense ABCP negotiations are not unlike the messy takeover or workout assignments he has taken on in recent years, including the sale of Royal Group Technologies Ltd. and Hummingbird Ltd.
"The pressure to perform is very intense ... but at the end of the day, it's about finding a common ground and a common cause with people who have different agendas," he said.
