Tom Friedland is a partner in the Dispute Resolution Group at Goodmans.
His litigation experience spans a wide range of corporate/commercial, securities, environmental and municipal law matters. He has represented clients at all levels of court in Ontario (and many other Canadian jurisdictions), as well as before various administrative and regulatory boards and tribunals, including the Ontario, Alberta and Quebec Securities Commissions, the Ontario Environmental Review Tribunal, the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal, the Ontario Assessment Review Board and various Public Inquiries. Tom frequently represents clients in international and domestic arbitrations, as well as in mediations and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.
In corporate/commercial and securities matters, Tom acts for clients involved in disputes across many different sectors, including clients in the hospitality, health care, oil and gas, mining, alternative power, technology, real estate, land development, construction, salvage and recycling, pension fund, gaming and entertainment industries. Tom has acted for more than 50 different clients in obtaining court approval for plan of arrangement transactions across Canada, including several of the most significant commercial transactions over the last 20 years. He has also acted in a number of poison pill hearings before securities commissions and the courts.
In his municipal law practice, Tom applies his diverse experience acting for developers and land owners in Building Code Act disputes, appeals under the Municipal Act, Heritage Act matters, challenges to development charges by-laws, municipal property assessments and Divisional Court appeals and judicial review hearings arising from Ontario Municipal Board and Local Planning Appeal Tribunal decisions.
In his environmental law practice, Tom regularly acts for clients involved in contaminated lands disputes and in regulatory matters involving the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.
