Major Competition Case Director Joins Goodmans

April 6, 2004, TORONTO – Goodmans LLP is extremely pleased to announce that Richard Annan is joining the firm as Head of its Competition Law Group.

Mr. Annan is the Major Case Director and Strategic Policy Advisor in the mergers branch of the Competition Bureau. Mr. Annan joined the Bureau in 1982 and has been in the mergers branch since its formation in 1987. He has led the examination of many significant mergers in a wide range of industries under the Competition Act. Most recently, he has acted as Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Competition responsible for the Mergers Notification Unit as well as Division A of the mergers branch.

“We are delighted that Richard has decided to join Goodmans,” said Dale H. Lastman, the firm’s Co- Chairman. “He is widely experienced in merger review in Canada and his expertise and knowledge will be invaluable to our clients.”

In 1998, Mr. Annan led the examination of the proposed mergers between the Royal Bank of Canada and the Bank of Montreal and between the Toronto-Dominion Bank and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. In 1999, he led the examination of the merger between Air Canada and Canadian Airlines. He has also been involved in a number of matters before the Competition Tribunal, including the Gemini I and II cases. Other major cases for which Mr. Annan was responsible include Rogers Communications Inc./Maclean Hunter; DTH Broadcast Satellite Consortium; Kimberly-Clark Corporation/Scott Paper Limited; Cascades Inc./Perkins Paper Ltd.; Hiram Walker/McGuiness Distillers Ltd.; Maple Leaf Foods/Burns Foods (1985) Ltd.; and Laidlaw Transportation Limited/Tricil Limited.

Mr. Annan is a graduate of Queen’s University (LL.B. 1980), and the University of Western Ontario (MBA 1982). He also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
