Energy
Goodmans is a leader in providing business and dispute resolution services to the energy sector in Ontario, particularly in the electricity industry. We represent numerous participants in the sector, including generators, transmitters, distributors, government agencies and regulators. We are widely recognized for our expertise in the industry.
Clients seek our advice on project development, procurement contracts, regulatory compliance, corporate finance and securities, and M&A matters not only in Canada, but around the world, as they expand their businesses. Many of our clients are innovators and we regularly work with investors and entrepreneurs who are developing new energy materials and technologies, partnering with them to bring their ideas to market. We are committed to addressing our clients’ needs at every stage: from the earliest discovery or concept; through development, funding, partnerships, and large-scale utility operations; to public offerings and other capital events.
Goodmans business lawyers have extensive experience in the renewable energy sphere. We are intimately familiar with the economics of the Canadian renewable power industry, the applicable legal framework and the regulatory initiatives at play. We represent some of Canada’s leading and pioneering renewable generators at home and abroad.
Our lawyers regularly act on dispute resolution matters that appear at the Ontario Energy Board on behalf of market participants, and have represented numerous parties in energy related disputes in the courts and in arbitration proceedings. We are known for representing major participants in the electricity sector in high-stakes proceedings and have appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada on multiple cases involving constitutional and other issues of significance to the industry.
Our litigation expertise extends to project development, power purchase agreements, utility regulation, market rule compliance, procurement programs and casualty claims. For many years, we have represented Ontario’s electricity distributors and the Canadian Electricity Association in a wide variety of commercial, regulatory and liability issues. We regularly advise leading participants on public and private law issues affecting the sector. We have represented Ontario’s independent market operator in numerous engagements, both advisory and litigious, concerning the procurement, development and management of renewable generation projects, and market rule compliance and amendment proceedings.
