Among the conditions reportedly creating tension was the insistence that Bancroft family appointees would control the use of The Wall Street Journal brand, along with Barron's and other well-known and valuable properties.
"That's what really appears to have inflamed [Mr. Murdoch]," said David Zitzerman, a partner in the entertainment division at law firm Goodmans LLP.
If he's paying a full and fair price, he wants to be able to use brand names including the Journal for his own purposes, Mr. Zitzerman said. He noted that Mr. Murdoch plans to launch a financial news channel this fall to compete with General Electric's powerhouse CNBC.
"There would be instant credibility to any network that had that name," said Mr. Zitzerman, who is not acting for anyone involved in the deal.
"Give me a choice between Wall Street Journal Television and Fox News Channel and I'd take Wall Street Journal," he said.
