"Goodmans reunites with Gormley", Global Competition Review:

Daniel Gormley, a former associate of Goodmans, is returning to the firm as a partner specializing in antitrust, GCR has learnt.

Gormley, 44, left the Canadian firm a short while ago to join ‘the Keg’ – a British Columbia-based steakhouse chain – as its executive vice president and general counsel.  Says Gormley:  “Although I’m disappointed that the move to Vancouver did not work out as planned, I’m thrilled to be returning to Goodmans, where I began my legal career.”

Says William Rosenfeld, former head of competition at Goodmans:  “We are more than pleased that Dan is returning to Goodmans.  We have always supported partners who saw opportunities in different spheres.  So when Dan left for the Keg, we had every wish to have him enjoy the move.  Equally, when he realised that Goodmans really is unique, we welcomed him back.”

Gormley specialises in merger submissions and has acted, for example, for Onex on its acquisition of Loews Cineplex in 2002, for DreamWorks in connection with the commissioner’s investigation of the Canadian film exhibition and distribution industries that started in 2000, and in Sun Media’s competition law defence for the attempted hostile takeover by Torstar in 1998.

Says Rosenfeld:  “He is a terrific lawyer – energetic, cheerful and knowledgeable.  His return will further add strength to our competition group, which, as a complement to our M&A practice, has become one of the most effective in Canada.”

Goodmans’ competition law group recently benefited from the arrival of Richard Annan from Canada’s Competition Bureau.  Annan, a former “major case director and strategic policy advisor” at the Competition Bureau, is now head of Goodmans’ competition law group.

Gormley cites Annan’s move to Goodmans as one reason for his return to Goodmans:  “I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to work with Richard.”  Adds Rosenfeld:  “Together, Richard and Dan will add luster to our competition practice. We now have a complete front bench.”

Gormley starts in August.
