John Alton is a partner in the Pension, Benefits and Compensation, Corporate and Commercial and Technology Groups at Goodmans.

John’s pension and benefits practice draws on over 30 years of experience in corporate commercial transactions to provide practical and efficient advice.  John frequently assists parties from other jurisdictions navigate Canada’s pension and benefit laws.  John advises on pensions and benefits issues in share and asset purchases, loan transactions and corporate restructurings and insolvencies.  John has advised private equity buyers and sellers, lenders, borrowers, management, unions and regulators in a variety of situations including those involving auction transactions, multi-national corporations, multi-employer and shared risk pension plans. John advises on pension plan design, amendment, governance and compliance. 

John’s corporate commercial practice involves mergers and acquisitions and financing transactions.  He has acted as the firm’s liaison for a full range of clients including a major Canadian leasing company, a significant Canadian steel company and one of Britain’s largest corporations.  He has extensive experience in contract law, aircraft finance and secured lending, in both domestic and cross-border transactions.

In John’s information technology practice, he has advised the Ontario government on various innovative public/private information technology projects. John has advised Canada’s leading mortgage technology firm and has negotiated master services agreements with many of Canada’s major banks.  He acted for clients who established one of Canada's first Internet portals.  John has advised the Canadian government on the application of international intellectual property laws to tobacco labelling regulations. 

John became a partner with Goodmans in 1989.

John has been a speaker and instructor at various Canadian Bar Association and The Law Society of Ontario programs.  He has written articles which have appeared in various Canadian and international publications.
