Mark Surchin is a partner at Goodmans. He has an active transactional corporate law practice, focused on private equity, secured lending work, subordinated debt securities and structured finance products. He is also Co-Chair of the firm’s Opinions Committee with particular expertise in opinions given in secured finance and structured finance transactions.
Mark also provides ongoing corporate/commercial advice to a number of longstanding clients carrying on business in Canada.
Mark’s transactional work involves both intra-Canadian and cross-border transactions. In particular, he regularly represents both domestic and non-Canadian businesses and funds making or disposing of an investment in Canada and in the related secured financing arrangements. Mark has been extensively involved in the senior credit facilities made available to various Canadian income funds as well as the issuance of high yield and other public debt securities. He also has extensive experience working with various financial advisors and auditors in connection with structuring intercompany debt.
Mark has been recognized as a leader in banking law by The Best Lawyers in Canada 2012 and IFLR 1000 and is AV Peer Review Rated by LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell.
Mark is currently the President of the Alumni Association and a member of the Board of Trustees of Brandeis University. He also volunteers at Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto General Hospital and Toronto Rehab. In 2018, Mark began teaching Business Organizations at the University of Toronto to their Global Professional Masters students.
Mark joined Goodmans in 1987 and became a partner in 1989.
