Richard Corley is a partner at Goodmans and leads the firm’s Cleantech practice group. He also leads the firm’s Outsourcing practice group. Combining his legal expertise with a unique background in engineering, mathematics, computer science and business, Richard's practice focuses on the intersection of law and technology. Richard has over 25 years of experience advising clients on complex outsourcing transactions, technology M&A, joint ventures, cleantech and other technology-related matters.

Richard's practice complements his personal interest and involvement in energy innovation. He is a member of the board of the Building Energy Innovators Council (BEIC), a founding director of Canadian Institute for Exponential Growth (which organized the SingularityU Canada Summit), a director of the Canadian Technology Law Association and a director and faculty of the Centre for Outsourcing Research and Education. Richard was named a member of Canada’s 2016 Clean50, a program honouring leaders who are advancing the cause of sustainability in Canada.

Richard obtained an LLM from Yale Law School in 1991, his LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1989 (Silver Medallist) and clerked for Chief Justice McLachlin at the Supreme Court of Canada.

Richard’s recent experience includes representing:

  • Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) in the procurement and the negotiation of agreements for new lottery terminals, a new retailer network and related services.
  • OLG in the procurement and the negotiation of agreements of a new player platform system and related services.
  • KIK Custom Products Inc. in the procurement and the negotiation of commercial technology agreements relating to a variety of outsourcing, cloud computing, software development, licensing, implementation and other services.
  • A Canadian gaming organization with respect to the procurement and negotiation of services agreements for gaming development projects and managed IT services.
  • A Canadian gaming organization with respect to the procurement and negotiation of services agreements for the development, implementation and operation of a modernized lottery system (both central system and internet gaming system).
  • A number of clients in the financial services, health care, commodities, food, beverage, retail, construction and other sectors in the procurement and negotiation of major outsourcing agreements and ERP implementation agreements.
  • Ericsson and Rockstar in connection with the acquisition of bankrupt Nortel Networks' portfolio of over 6000 patents for a price of $4.5 billion.
  • Ericsson in its acquisitions of the wireless CDMA and GSM business and other business units from Nortel Networks, and other Canadian businesses.
