“Anne of Green Gables” has been a part of the Canadian cultural zeitgeist since 1908, when the original novel was written by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Set in the late 19th century, the story focuses on the exploits of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old girl who is mistakenly sent to the fictional town of Avonlea, Prince Edward Island.
