Stephen Pincus, chair of the Income Funds Group at Canadian law firm Goodmans, says the uniqueness of income trusts and their potential windfall are attracting more US investors. But at the same time the income trust market is driving up competition for buyout deals. “Income trusts provide such high valuations, that it’s a nicer choice than selling to a private equity firm,” he says. “As a result, income trusts have bid up the market and are making it harder for private equity groups to compete.”
