Elekta Files Suit Against ZAP
Elekta, a California-based radiotherapy provider, is suing ZAP Surgical Systems for patent infringement, alleging that ZAP’s manufacturing, importing, advertising, sale and use of ZAP-X Gyroscopic Radiosurgery platforms is in violation of a patent for a “rotatable treatment system” held by Elekta.
Elekta is seeking monetary damages for the alleged infringement, as a well as an injunction to stop the importing, manufacturing and sale of the product in the United States. According to Mass Device, ZAP is acting quickly and plans to aggressively defend itself.
The ZAP platform in question received FDA clearance in 2017 and is designed as an alternative to invasive brain surgery. It delivers a high-dose of radiation to brain tumors with a high degree of precision and no interference with surrounding brain tissue or other organs. ZAP claims its technology is safer and more precise than existing comparable technology.
