Eye-Tracking Technology Coming to Sony Virtual Reality Headsets
As reported by TechRadar and Inverse, a Sony patent recently filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office suggests eye-tracking is coming soon to its Virtual Reality (“VR”) headsets.
Incorporating eye-tracking technology into VR headsets could bring significant enhancements to the user experience. According to the patent, the VR system would adapt to the unique positioning of each individual user’s eyes, eliminating the need for constant adjustments to the headset’s strap. The eye-tracking technology would provide greater depth perception, which would in turn heighten user immersion and reduce eye strain over long gaming sessions. It could also increase accessibility for disabled gamers through alternative control and interfacing options.
Although there has been no official confirmation, internet whisperings suggest that Sony could release these eye-tracking-enabled headsets together with its PS5, which is slated for a 2020 launch.
