Steve McQueen’s son sues Tom Ford
Steve McQueen was the “King of Cool” in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and his legacy remains influential in pop culture. In California, an individual’s right to control the commercial uses of his name, image or likeness survives his death.
Chadwick McQueen, the son of Steve McQueen, is suing Tom Ford over a cardigan design named after the legendary actor. The designer is selling wool button up sweaters with a shawl collar, each retailing for over $2000 CAD, that were inspired by the late actor, whose style and bad boy reputation made the look fashionable.
As reported by The Fashion Law, McQueen’s son, who now controls McQueen’s publicity and trademark rights, is accusing Tom Ford of profiting off his father’s iconic image. He is seeking $2 million in statutory damages, disgorgement of profits, and an injunction to stop companies from using his father’s trademark, name and persona.
