NFL Quarterback Kyler Murray Seeks to Trademark Catchphrases, “Hail Murray” and “Murray Magic”

As reported by ESPN, Arizona Cardinals quarterback, Kyler Murray, has filed a pair of trademark applications. Both applications are currently “awaiting examination” by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
The first application, filed by K1 Promotions, LLC, seeks to trademark the phrase, "Hail Murray", a nod to the athlete’s 43-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass to defeat the Bills. The “Hail Murray” play-on-words amused the 23 year-old, who called it a “cool coincidence”. Murray’s team has also filed paperwork to trademark "Murray Magic", a phrase exclaimed by CBS announcer, Ian Eagle, following the incredible game-winning touchdown.
According to the Arizona Republic, Murray intends to use the trademarks for future apparel purposes, specifically, hats, visors, caps, shirts, and other types of clothing. The application also notes the phrases will be used on a website “featuring information relating to the sport of football and information about appearances, accomplishments, exploits and biography of a professional football player".
If the USPTO registers Murray’s trademarks, he will join the likes of current and former NFL players, Tim Tebow, Aaron Rodgers and Marshawn Lynch, all of whom have registered their names, catchphrases and other business ventures.
